As we have all experienced the economic challenges over the past year, we would like to offer you energy saving tips along with coupons each week. Consider a programmable thermostat that can be set to run your units when needed. When you are away at work or on vacation there is no need for your unit to run. This small step saves you energy! Check out the our coupon on the home page for even more savings . . .

A

Air handler
Air moving and /or mixing unit: may include blower, filters, dampers etc.
Auxiliary
A control or component which is not vital to the units operation: a supplemental component.
B
Boiler

A sealed chamber in which water is converted to steam or is heated for circulation in a hydronic heating system

Btu

British thermal unit.

C
Compressor

A mechanical pump in a refrigeration system that recovers refrigerant vapor and rises its temperature and pressure to the point where it can be condensed for reuse.

Condensate

Water vapor that liquefies due to the lowering of its temperature to the saturation point.

Condensate pump
A water pump which disposes of, or re circulates, collected condensation.
Condenser

A heat exchanger in which compressed refrigerant vapor is cooled until it becomes a liquid.

Condensing unit
The compressor, condenser, receiver, and controls that may come as a packaged unit
Cooling coil
Any section of coiled tubing used to lower the temperature of the surrounding area: usually an evaporator.
D
Damper
A panel or baffle used to control the volume of flowing air
Decibel
A unit of measure for the loudness of sounds
Defrost cycle
The period during operation of refrigeration equipment when frost is melted off the evaporator..
Dehumidifier

An air cooler that removes moisture from the air.

Diagnosis
Evaluation of what, if anything, is wrong with a system and what must be done to repair it.
Disconnect

A switch or box that cuts off electrical power to a machine being serviced.

Drip pan/drain pan

A pan used to catch and collect evaporator condensate.

Duct

A pipe or conduit through which air is delivered.

Duct heater
A heater mounted inside an air delivery duct that provides supplemental heat to delivered air
E
EER

Energy efficiency ratio; the number of Btu's produced per watt of electrical power consumed by an air conditioner.

Efficiency

The amount of usable energy produced by a machine

Electric heat

Any heating system which the prime energy source is electricity

Evaporator

A tubing coil in which a volatile liquid evaporates and absorbs heat

Exhaust
Vent or opening for unwanted or unused air
F
Fan coil
A heating and cooling unit consisting of a finned-tube coil and fan in a single enclosure
Filter

Any device that removes impurities through a straining process

Flue

Any vent or passageway that carries combustion from a boiler or furnace

Fossil fuel
Minerals or gases that are burned to produce heat
Freon
A type of refrigerant used to charge systems
Furnace
That part of the heating system in which combustion and heat transfer occurs
G
Grille
A louvered panel or covering for the end of the duct permitting air to flow through
H
Heat pump

A system which can be reversed to heat or cool the controlled space

Humidifier

Adds water vapor to the air to increase humidity

I
Infrared heat
Heater that converts flame energy into radiant energy
P
Package unit

A system with all the major components contained in a single cabinet

Pilot

A small constant flame used to ignite the main gas burner

R
Refrigerant
Any substance that transfers heat from one place to another, creating a cooling effect
Register

A grille with adjustable louvers for controlling the direction of discharge air

S
Self-contained system
A system that can be moved without disconnecting refrigerant lines
Split system
An air conditioning system having the evaporator and the condenser separate from one another
T
Thermostat
A temperature-sensitive electrical circuit control that is responsive to air temperature
Through-the-wall unit

A type of unit in which the chassis is mounted through the outer wall with the evaporator inside and the condenser outside

W
Warranty

An assurance of the product's proper operation and performance

Window unit
An air conditioning which is mounted in a window
Z
Zone system

A system designed to maintain varying conditions for various rooms or zones.
